What is the currency in Costa Rica?
Be prepared for your next vacation.
Costa Rica’s currency is the “Colon,” so named after explorer Cristobal Colon (Christopher Columbus). The currency was introduced to the country in 1896. Exchange rates fluctuate constantly and we recommend a quick check before your trip.
What’s great about Costa Rica is that all major credit and debit cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express) and U.S. dollars are accepted almost anywhere in the country. You don’t have to worry about changing a lot of money. A small amount of “Colones” will do just fine for any rare situation where you can’t pay with U.S. dollars or with credit or debit card.
Make sure to let your home bank know before you leave that you will be traveling to Costa Rica and using your credit or debit card, or your bank may freeze your funds thinking that someone has stolen your card.
Costa Rica’s “Colones” bills are very colorful with designs depicting Costa Rica’s flora, fauna, national heroes and ecosystems. They make a very nice souvenir!
